Package Depot's Tri-lam Capabilities

Tri - lam is the combination of foil, foam and high density polyethylene film.  This three layer combination has remarkable tear resistance as well as excellent thermal properties.  See web page...
This process allows Package Depot to produce unique materials by providing different thicknesses of components to customize almost any client order.  By adjusting the thickness of the foam different levels of thermal protection are achieved.  The polyethylene film provides great tear resistance and can be applied to both sides of the foam layer (film/foam/film) to produce a very tough thermal material.

Testing results: Polystyrene vs. Foil/foam

This graph shows how our product stands up against polystyrene.  The pictures below show how we
packaged the foil/foam and how we packaged the polystyrene.  We wanted to make sure that the
inner dimensions for both containers were the same.  The savings in weight allowed is to put 2
extra 16 ounce gel packs in the foil/foam bag.  The weight of the molded polystyrene with
a cardboard box and the foil/foam bag with a cardboard box were both 11 pounds.   See the
full site at foamconverting.com

As you can see both the polystyrene and our foil/foam packaging performed about the same for the
first 24 hours.  However where we excelled was over the next 24 hours where we only gained 9
degrees and the Styrofoam  gained almost 13 degrees.  While this might not sound like much,
it can be the difference between your perishables getting to the destination frozen or thawed.
One of the added benefits to the foil and foam packaging is that because of the flexibility of the
material it allows for excess air to be pushed out of the packaging.  We did not do this for
the test but would be of great improvement to the extension of the packaging staying cold.

 Benefits of foil/foam:

-Cheaper than same size polystyrene
-Smaller sidewalls so allows for more refrigerant in same box
-Better for the environment that polystyrene
-Significant reduction of inbound freight costs
-Reduction in storage space

Insulated Bags introduced by Package Depot

 18x15 insulated bag

Another great new product has arrived from Package Depot's New Product Division called 'Insulated Bags'.  This new product was developed especially for the Seafood Industry, but has found its way to may other industries as a unique way of protecting temperature sensitive products during shipment.

These new insulated bags provide the thermal protection of styrofoam without the storage issues and at a very competitave price.  These insulated bags can be reused and are made of a thermal sensitive foil laminated to foam.  The foam thickness can be altered to fit the thermal protect that you may need.  These thermal bags come in standard sizes (which fit in standard boxes within the industry) but the Division of Foam Converting delivers many different custom bags that are 'made to order'.  The website that sells these is http://foamconverting.com  and also has a unique calculator to give you a pretty close estimate of what a custom pouch would cost given the dimensions of the box and quantity desired.  The calculator can be seen and tested at http://foamconverting.com/PRODUCTS2.ASP?CAT=2
